A luxury Abu Dhabi hotel says it regrets erecting an elaborate Christmas tree decorated with $11 million worth of jewellery in its foyer. Billed as the most expensive Christmas tree in the world, the fake article was decorated with gems and jewellery worth $11 million. The Abu Dhabi hotel Emirates Palace, the most lavish hotel in the Gulf, insists it did not create or buy the tree, but was displaying it only – a move it now regrets. A statement from the hotel said it regretted “attempts to overload the tradition” by dressing the 13-metre tree with gold, diamonds, rubies and other gems. “The hotel is just a venue for exhibiting the tree”, the statement said. “Putting the Christmas tree up is not a novelty, rather it is a tradition meant to share in celebrating occasions guests hold while they are away from their home countries and families.”
